Gestational Diabetes (Pregnancy Diabetes)
Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is a type of diabetes that develops or is first recognized during pregnancy. It occurs when the body cannot produce enough insulin to meet the extra demands of pregnancy, leading to elevated blood glucose levels. This condition typically appears in the second or third trimester and affects many pregnant women in India due to genetic predisposition and lifestyle factors. While it often resolves after childbirth, untreated gestational diabetes can pose health risks to both the mother and the developing baby, including excessive birth weight, premature birth, and a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life. Pregnant women should undergo routine screening as advised by their obstetrician, and consult an endocrinologist promptly if blood sugar levels are elevated.
